How to convert StarDict dictionary files to text files and vice versa

How to make your own dictionaries in StarDict format? How to convert dictionaries in StarDict format to text files?

In this article, I explain how to:
- Compile a text file to a StarDict format dictionary
- Decompile a StarDict format dictionary to a text file

Tool needed: Stardict Editor (version 3.0.1)

We use a tool called "Stardict Editor" to compile our text dictionaries to StarDict dictionaries and decompile dictionary files to text files (for viewing etc).

Download Stardict Editor

Stardict Editor download: https://code.google.com/archive/p/stardictproject/downloads
=> Download stardict-editor-3.0.1.rar file then unzip with 7zip or Winrar etc.

Alternative link for Stardict Editor: https://code.google.com/archive/p/stardict-3/downloads

Here's what I get: File stardict-editor.exe.

Double click and I get error message of missing .dll:

Error message:
stardict-editor.exe - System Error
The code execution cannot proceed because libglib-2.0-0.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
Not only the file "libglib-2.0-0.dll" is missing, but a bunch of .dll files missing.

Download and install GTK+ for Windows Runtime Environment

Where to download and how to open StarDict dictionary files?

Dictionary files may be a good source of hints when you translate your projects. A pre-installed dictionary, e.g. in OmegaT, could help you save plenty of time.

What is StarDict file format?

StarDict is a dictionary file format developed by Hu Zheng (胡正, Vietnamese: Hồ Chánh). It is often a folder contain 3 files: ***.dict.dz (or ***.dict), ***.idx, ***.ifo with the same name.

For example (in this case I use GoldenDict to utilize the dictinary files):

To download some StarDict dictionary files
Try these websites:

How to open StarDict dictionary files using look up program?

You can use StarDict software (a Chinese software) or GoldenDict software (a Russian software), etc.

Here's my test wit GoldenDict software. You can download a Windows installer or a Windows portable version of GoldenDict here.

Using GoldenDict software to open and look up StarDict dictionary files

Step 1: Download portable version (or installer) of GoldenDict

Unzip it for example to GoldenDict folder in Desktop:

Using dictionaries in OmegaT

In this article, I simulate the process of using dictionary file(s) to help translation in OmegaT.

First, I download a Japanese-English dictionary (in Stardict format) and extract it .bz2 file => .tar file => folder.

This dictionary folder contains 3 files: .dz, .idx and .ifo.

Next, I create an OmegaT project called "Test Dictionary in OmegaT" to translate a document from Japanese to English to test dictionary function. Here's folder of the project.

I copy Japanese-English dictionary folder into "\dictionary" folder of the project.

Simulation of creating and using a translation memory (TM) in OmegaT

[Vietnamese] Mô phỏng tạo và sử dụng bộ nhớ dịch (translation memory, TM) để dịch thuật trong OmegaT.
[Japanese] OmegaTにおける翻訳メモリ(英語: translation memory, TM)の作成および使用のシミュレーション

When translating using OmegaT, translated segments (sentences, paragraphs, etc) will be added to project's TM automatically to be utilized inside the project. However, if I have a pair of source file and translated file (target file) that I translated before in the past, I can make a TM from this pair of files and utilize it in my projects.

First, I make a pair of souce file and target file (translated file).

One file is in Japanese and the other is translated Vietnamese one.

OmegaT: Add Glossary Entry

Here's how to add a new glossary entry into OmegaT glossary file.

1. Select word to add, right click it and "Add Glossary Entry".

2. The word will be copied automatically into source term's textbox.

3. Next, select target term.

Simulation of translating with OmegaT
