Using dictionaries in OmegaT

In this article, I simulate the process of using dictionary file(s) to help translation in OmegaT.

First, I download a Japanese-English dictionary (in Stardict format) and extract it .bz2 file => .tar file => folder.

This dictionary folder contains 3 files: .dz, .idx and .ifo.

Next, I create an OmegaT project called "Test Dictionary in OmegaT" to translate a document from Japanese to English to test dictionary function. Here's folder of the project.

I copy Japanese-English dictionary folder into "\dictionary" folder of the project.

Open project in OmegaT. Click "Dictionary" tab at bottom of OmegaT window.

I can see word looking-up in Dictionary window for translating segment.

Using Fuzzy Matching for Dictionary Entries

【日本語】OmegaTにおける辞書のファジーマッチング(あいまい一致)を有効にする

Options menu > Dictionary > Check "Using Fuzzy Matching for Dictionary Entries"

"Using Fuzzy Matching for Dictionary Entries" checked.

Question: Can I use Japanese-English dictionary for my Japanese-Vietnamese translation project in OmegaT?

That means, can I use a dictionary as translation reference if target language of that dictionary and target language of translation differs? (Of course the source language should be the same)

So I put Ja-En dictionary into "dictionary" folder of my Japanese-Vietnamese translation project, like this:

Now I open my JA-VI project:

The dictionary works and I can use it as a reference. I can copy text from dictionary as well.
